As part of diabetes awareness and prevention, a day was organized last Saturday in Puygaillard-de-Quercy, highlighting this sometimes sneaky disease that affects more than 4 million French people.

It was a very interesting information day which was organized last Saturday, in Puygaillard-de-Quercy, by the volunteers of the AFD Occitanie (French association of diabetics), more precisely under the impetus of Nadège Littré, secretary regional office of the AFD and elected to the municipal council of Puygaillard-de-Quercy. This wonderful initiative has allowed the public to approach this disease which affects more than 4 million people in France and which calls out for the consequences that can occur. In fact, diabetes is the first cause of blindness before the age of 65, the second cause of cardiovascular diseases, the first cause of amputations other than accidents and the first cause of dialysis. Two forms of diabetes: type 1, for 10% of cases, falls into the category of autoimmune diseases; that of type 2, for 90% of cases, is related to age and overweight. In all cases, the pancreas does not produce enough insulin and the patient resorts to treatment. On the prevention side, a balanced diet and regular physical activity are the main recommendations.

Presence of David Billorte, director of the ARS, and elected officials

The presentations were the subject of the visit of David Billorte, director of ARS 82, who underlined the importance of this awareness-raising in rural areas: “I welcome the mobilization for the organization of this day in the face of this cause. which is a public health issue. Diabetes is a chronic disease. The importance of physical activity has been stressed in order to reduce the number of patients and the progression of the disease, sedentary lifestyles are to be avoided, the real benefit is based on 30 minutes a day of physical activity and also on food control; do not forget the motto of the 5 daily fruits and vegetables…” Patricia Ducassé, departmental councilor of the canton, specified: “The importance of such meetings accentuates awareness and education in the prevention of this often sneaky disease. We must commit ourselves today to act collectively in order to prevent diabetes…” Also attending Cédric Vayssières, departmental councilor of the neighboring canton, guest, representing Valérie Rabault , deputy. Mrs Daix, President of AFD Occitanie: “This sport-health-well-being day organized in Puygaillard-de-Quercy is in line with the association’s actions. This morning’s hike, where 50 people participated, serves as a backdrop for the general action to prevent diabetes…”
