France carried out 210 nuclear tests from February 13, 1960 to January 27, 1996, first in the Algerian Sahara (Reggane then In Ecker) then in Polynesia (Moruroa and Fangataufa). Tens of thousands of people, civilians and military, participated in these trials, many were from the region, many are now experiencing health problems. In addition, many local populations were seriously exposed. Nearly 6,000 veterans have already contacted the Association of French Nuclear Test Veterans (AVEN) and their families. A young association formed in June 2001.

A duty of truth for the victims

The AVEN aims to demand that the whole truth be revealed on the conditions of protection and exposure of workers on the sites, and that justice be done to the unfortunate victims of these situations as well as to their families and beneficiaries. A law for the compensation of victims of nuclear tests has existed since January 5, 2010 with the creation of the Committee for the Compensation of Victims of Nuclear Tests (CIVEN) but this law does not take into account damage by ricochet or to their descendants. Veterans wonder and ask many questions about the illnesses and suffering they suffer as well as the risks for their descendants. From a health survey of veterans, it turns out that many of them encounter health problems, for example 34% of veterans who answered the health questionnaire report one or more cancers, this percentage is twice the annual incidence of cancer in France for the same age group (17%).
