Five years after the start of the affairthe first results of Lescout’s air analyzes have come in. Claimed for a long time by a collective of inhabitants of the southern Tarn village who complain of olfactory nuisances and danger to their health, the origin of which, according to them, comes from the laying hen factory, the first quarterly report of air analyses, started in October 2022, has just been presented by Atmo Occitania.

“This progress report delivers lessons, which will be consolidated over a full year in order to assess the exposure of populations and the ecosystem to air pollution in the territory. Requested by State services and local authorities Atmo Occitanie’s partnership with the municipality of Lescout aims to assess pollution levels and sources of pollutants linked to local activities. The assessment will extend over a full year in order to take into account the variation in weather conditions. more or less favorable to the dispersion of pollutants in the air and emissions of pollutants in the air linked to local activities”, explains in the preamble the Atmo, before delivering its results.

Conclusions delivered in the first half of 2024

On the smells : “Reports of odors on 15% of the days of the past period, most evoking odors of organic decomposition.”
On the ammonia releases : “No exceeding of the reference value defined in relation to chronic exposure to ammonia. The minimum olfactory threshold seems to have been reached on time in the municipality.”
Regarding the level of pesticides : “The profile of pesticide concentrations over this quarter is characteristic of a cereal environment, with the almost exclusive presence of herbicides. An antiparasitic insecticide is found on a sample, permethrin, in low concentration compared to the total load in herbicide. The uses listed by ANSES are multiple: veterinary use, human medicine and wood protection.”
THE dust fallout : “The levels are lower than the reference value for the
total dust fallout. The amounts of chlorides, sodium, and sulfates are
comparable to those highlighted in Castres, with the exception of a measurement point close
poultry farming activities.

The Atmo finally announces that “the conclusions will be published in the form of an evaluation report to be published in the first half of 2024.” Until then, interim reports will be produced each quarter and made available on their website.
