As every year since 1987, at the initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO), May 31, 2023 was World No Tobacco Day”. The theme this year was: “Let’s grow food, not tobacco”. .
It was an opportunity to recall that the tobacco industry is partly responsible for deforestation, air pollution, water waste, polluted beaches and contributes to the global food crisis.
As a reminder, tobacco is the leading cause of avoidable premature death in France with nearly 75,000 deaths annually. 60% of smokers declare that they want to quit smoking with the main motivations: health, financial cost and fatigue with addiction.
As part of its Prevention and Health Promotion missions, the Territorial Prevention Support Team (ETAP) of the Hospital Center (CH) of Gourdon, in partnership with the Tobacco and Addictology Liaison Unit ( UTLA) of the CH of Cahors, the Committee of Studies and Information for Social Integration (CEIIS) and the CH of Figeac, mobilized.
An information and awareness stand, intended for patients, users and professionals, was held in the reception hall of the CH de Figeac.
An information and exchange workshop in order to differentiate between vaping, puff, heated tobacco and nicopouches/nicopods, was held in the premises of the Espace Jeunes Intercommunal de Figeac. It was led by the team of prevention mediators, a smoking cessation nurse and the Space facilitators.
The objectives of these interventions were: To inform about the responsibility of the tobacco industry (harm to the health of men and the planet) in global warming and the world food crisis. To increase knowledge and raise awareness about smoking. To promote actions aimed at quitting smoking and its complete denormalization.
