Emma Heming Willis, wife of legendary Die Hard actor Bruce Willis, has revealed that she once considered ending their marriage before his diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) shed light on the struggles they were facing as a couple.
Bruce, 70, was officially diagnosed with FTD in 2022, after years of unexplained changes in his behavior and communication. Emma, 47, has since transitioned into the role of full-time caregiver, an experience she candidly documents in her upcoming memoir The Unexpected Journey: Finding Hope and Purpose on the Caregiving Path.

The former model shared her deeply personal story in a recent interview on The Oprah Podcast, where she described the marital strain that preceded the devastating diagnosis.
Considering Divorce Before Diagnosis
Emma Heming Willis admitted that she “100% thought about divorce,” explaining that Bruce’s personality and values seemed to shift. “We weren’t aligning on things we used to,” she said. “Our values didn’t seem to be matching anymore. I didn’t understand what was happening. I just thought he was disengaging.”
For nearly two years, she noticed arguments and the distance growing in their marriage. She initially assumed the relationship was failing, unaware that Bruce’s brain was under the assault of a degenerative disease.
Signs Something Was Wrong
Emma recalled noticing Bruce’s childhood stutter resurfacing, a subtle but early warning sign of his condition. Other changes included a loss of initiative in conversations and decisions. “He wasn’t raising his hand about anything,” Emma said. “That wasn’t the Bruce I knew.”
Her intuition eventually led her to seek medical advice, where the devastating truth became clear.
Facing the Diagnosis
Emma Heming Willis described the day they received the diagnosis as surreal. Doctors handed them a pamphlet explaining FTD, but Bruce seemed not to grasp its meaning. “I don’t think it landed, and I’m grateful for that,” she admitted.
New Insights and Struggles
- Impact on Intimacy – Emma revealed that emotional and physical intimacy had been strained in the years before the diagnosis, which added to her confusion. “It felt like he was slipping away from me long before I knew why,” she said.
- Support from Demi Moore – Bruce’s ex-wife Demi Moore has become a constant source of support, both to Emma and their daughters. Demi reportedly attends family gatherings regularly and helps Emma coordinate care schedules.
- Children’s Perspective – Their daughters Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, initially struggled to understand why their father was changing. Emma said she had to explain dementia to them in age-appropriate terms, assuring them that “Daddy is still Daddy, just different.”
- Coping Mechanism – Emma credits therapy and caregiver support groups for helping her survive emotionally. “I realized that if I crumbled, my children would lose both parents,” she said.
- Bruce’s Current Condition – While Bruce no longer tracks words consistently, Emma insists he remains “so present in the here and now,” often smiling and showing affection during visits.
- Living Arrangements – Bruce has since moved into a professional care facility that provides round-the-clock support, a decision Emma made to protect their daughters’ home life. Noise and overstimulation had made family life increasingly difficult.
- A New Family Rhythm – Emma Heming Willis maintains a routine of having breakfast and dinner with Bruce daily, ensuring continuity in their relationship. Their children also visit several times a week, alongside his older daughters Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah.
- Financial Strain – Although not widely discussed, Emma acknowledged that caregiving and medical expenses have been overwhelming. She stressed the importance of planning for long-term care in families facing dementia.
- Legacy Projects – Bruce’s family is quietly working on compiling his film memorabilia and personal archives so that his children will always have a tangible connection to his legacy as one of Hollywood’s most iconic actors.
- Emma’s Advocacy – Beyond her book, Emma has started speaking publicly about the need for more awareness and resources for families facing FTD. She hopes her story will destigmatize the disease and encourage caregivers to seek help early.
The Hardest Decision
Moving Bruce into care was, according to Emma, one of the most difficult choices she has ever made. “Bruce is in great health overall—it’s just his brain that is failing him,” she said. But ultimately, she believed he would have wanted her to prioritize their daughters’ well-being.
Holding the Family Together
Despite the heartbreak, Emma says Bruce’s blended family has grown even closer. With Demi Moore and the Willis daughters rallying around, Emma describes their bond as “an unshakable circle of love” surrounding Bruce.
“Bruce was the most generous husband and father,” Emma reflected. “He always put his children first. I try to live by that every single day.”
